THE HISTORY OF HOLY NAME

One of the most elaborate services at the Holy Name was the funeral of Sir Charles Halle in October 1895.
There was a thick fog on the morning of the 29th October, the day of the funeral. It is noted in the journals of that time that the High Mass was at 10:30am.
The Orchestra and Choir performed the Mozart Requiem, and after the bishop had preached, the Orchestra performed the "Eroica" . The body of Sir Charles Halle reached the Cemetery at 2:30pm.
The crowds where vast, all the way to the cemetery.

Statistics for the early years may give some idea of the 'business' of the church.
In 1875 and '76 respectively,
confessions numbered 16,518 and 18,293, Easter Communions 1738 and 1718, baptisms 88 and 104, converts 45 and 26.
At the beginning of the century (1900), the population of the parish is given as 3,500, and baptisms had risen to 125, confessions to 32,815, Easter Communions to 2,850 and converts numbered 25.
